  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt. See TIMING BELT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate article in ENGINES.
  3. Hold hexagonal part of the intake camshaft with an adjustable wrench to prevent camshaft from rotating. See Fig 1 . Attempt to rotate Variable Valve Timing (VVT) actuator by hand and ensure it does not move. If VVT actuator moves, stopper pin in VVT actuator is not operating. Replace VVT actuator.

  4. Install timing belt. See TIMING BELT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate article in ENGINES.
