- Install left side timing chain by aligning colored links of timing chain with marks on timing sprockets. See Fig 1. Ensure crankshaft keyway is in 11 o'clock position. Rotate intake camshaft mark to 9 o'clock position, and exhaust camshaft mark to 12 o'clock position. Install left side timing chain components in following order: timing chain crankshaft sprocket, chain guide, timing chain and tensioner arm. See Figure.
- Align camshaft end play using camshaft bearing thrust caps. Tighten bearing caps in sequence, using several passes. See Figure. Tighten camshaft bearing thrust caps to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ .
- Install right timing chain by aligning colored links of timing chain with marks on timing sprockets. See Fig 2. Rotate crankshaft clockwise until keyway is in 3 o'clock position. Rotate exhaust camshaft mark to 12 o'clock position, and intake exhaust camshaft mark to 3 o'clock position. Install right side timing chain components in the following order: chain guide, timing chain and tensioner arm. See Figure.
- Align camshaft end play using camshaft bearing thrust caps. Tighten bearing caps in sequence, using several passes. See Figure. Tighten camshaft bearing thrust caps to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ .
- Place left chain tensioner in soft-jaw vise. Using thin screwdriver, hold left chain tensioner ratchet lock mechanism away from ratchet stem. Slowly compress tensioner piston. Hold tensioner piston in place using a .059" (1.5 mm) wire. Install left chain tensioner, and remove retaining wire.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise 1 and 2/3 turns until key is in 11 o'clock position. Ensure marks on back of camshaft sprockets are aligned. See Figure. Use CKP keyway marked "25" to install rotor with indentation facing front.
- Before installing engine front cover, apply sealant at designated areas. See Fig 3. Install retaining bolts and studs. Tighten in sequence. See Figure. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ .
- Assemble front oil seal. Apply engine oil to lip of seal. Push oil seal in slightly, by hand. Using crankshaft seal installer/aligner and crankshaft damper replacer, compress oil seal.
- Using sealant, seal keyway in crankshaft pulley. Using crankshaft damper replacer and crankshaft pulley lock bolt washer. Hold crankshaft pulley, using commercially available tool. Tighten NEW crankshaft pulley lock bolt to 89 ft. lbs. (120 N.m). Loosen bolt 360 degrees (one full turn), in reverse order. Retighten bolt to 35-39 ft. lbs. (47-53 N.m). Tighten bolt an additional 85-95 degrees.
- Install generator bracket, No. 3 engine mount rubber and No. 3 engine joint bracket. Apply sealant to right cylinder head mating surfaces. Install cylinder head cover with NEW gasket. Tighten bolts in sequence. See Figure. Tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ .
- Raise and support vehicle. Tighten right engine hanger installation bolts. Install wiring harness and connector bracket. Apply sealant to left cylinder head mating surfaces. Install cylinder head cover with NEW gasket. Tighten bolts in sequence. See Figure.
- Apply clean engine oil to camshaft oil seal. Using pump pulley replacer, camshaft seal replacer and camshaft seal protector, install camshaft oil seal. Using pump pulley replacer, install water pump drive belt pulley. Install water pump drive belt and cover.
- Tighten all bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ .
CAUTION:
Install camshaft journal thrust cap last to prevent damage to caps.
