  1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate article in ENGINES.
  3. Hold hexagonal part of intake camshaft with an adjustable wrench to prevent camshaft from rotating. See Fig 1. Attempt to rotate variable valve timing actuator by hand and ensure it does not move. If variable valve timing actuator moves, stopper pin in variable valve timing actuator is not operating. Replace variable valve timing actuator.

  4. Install timing belt. See TIMING BELT under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate article in ENGINES.
