- Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester and retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See MODULE COMMUNICATION NETWORK - TRIBUTE article under ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Attend to any DTCs as necessary. If no DTCs are present, disconnect NGS and go to next step.
- Start engine. Using DVOM, measure voltage at battery while varying engine RPM. If voltage is not greater than 15 volts, go to next step. If voltage is greater than 15 volts, go to step Β 4.
- Vary engine RPM and observe voltage gauge operation. If voltage gauge indicates more than 15 volts, then investigate instrument cluster fault. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS - TRIBUTE article under ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If voltage gauge does not indicate more than 15 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect generator connector X-102a. See Figure. Start engine. Perform generator load test. See GENERATOR LOAD TESTΒ under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. If generator is okay, go to next step. Replace generator if faulty. See GENERATORΒ under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Measure voltage between generator connector X-102a terminal No. 3 (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. If voltage drop is less then .5 volts, replace generator. See GENERATORΒ under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If measured voltage drop is .5 volts or more, repair open circuit in Black/Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMSΒ .
