DTC 6: Driver-Side Air Bag Module

NOTE:
DTC 6 will set when resistance between terminals "D" and "G" of SAS unit is NOT 1.85-3.46 ohms.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEMΒ . Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATIONΒ . Inspect clockspring short bar separator. If clockspring short bar separator is okay, go to next step if diagnosed as a present malfunction, or go to step 7) if diagnosed as a past malfunction. If clockspring short bar separator is not okay, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRINGΒ under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Connect leads of Fuel And Thermometer Checker (49 0839 285) to clockspring connector terminals at steering wheel. Set resistance of checker to 2 ohms. Connect clockspring connector. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position. If DTC 6 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC 6 is not indicated, replace driver-side air bag module.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait more than one minute for back-up power to deplete. Remove steering column covers. Disconnect clockspring connector. If clockspring short bar separator is okay, go to next step. If clockspring short bar separator is not okay, replace clockspring to SAS unit wiring harness.
- Connect leads of fuel and thermometer checker to clockspring 2-pin connector at base of steering wheel. Set resistance of checker to 2 ohms. Connect clockspring connector. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to ON position. If DTC 6 is indicated, go to next step. If DTC 6 is not indicated, replace clockspring.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait for more than one minute for back-up power to deplete. Remove rear and front console and side wall. Disconnect SAS unit connector.
- Check wiring harness between terminal "D" of SAS unit connector and terminal "A" (Yellow/Red wire) of clockspring connector, and between terminal "G" of SAS unit connector and terminal "B" (Yellow/Black wire) of clockspring connector for following: short to ground; short to power supply; open circuit. See Figure . If wiring harness is okay, replace SAS unit. See SAS UNITΒ under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If wiring harness is not okay, replace clockspring to SAS unit wiring harness.
- Remove clockspring. See CLOCKSPRINGΒ under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check clockspring continuity between specified terminals. See Fig 1 . Continuity should exist as specified. If continuity exists as specified, go to next step. If continuity does not exist as specified, replace clockspring.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait for more than one minute for back-up power to deplete. Remove rear and front console and side wall. Disconnect SAS unit connector.
- Check wiring harness between terminal "D" of SAS unit connector and terminal "A" (Yellow/Red wire) of clockspring connector, and between terminal "G" of SAS unit connector and terminal "B" (Yellow/Black wire) of clockspring connector for following: short to ground; short to power supply; open circuit. See Figure . If wiring harness is okay, replace driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULEΒ under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If wiring harness is not okay, replace wiring harness.
