Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

2016 Lincoln MKZ Base, 2.0L Eng VIN 9, AWDSECTION Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

With the ignition ON, the TBM sends messages to the ABS module over the MSCAN through the GWM. If the ABS module does not receive these messages within the specified time frame, the module sets a DTC. This can be due to a TBM failure, a circuit failure on the GWM or an excessive load on the network. For information on the messages sent to the ABS module by the TBM, refer to the Description and Operation in  Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) And Stability Control (Except Hybrid)  .

Possible Causes

  • Network communication concern
  • Battery/charging system concern
  • TBM
  • ABS module
  1. S1: CHECK THE COMMUNICATION NETWORK
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Press the Read Vehicle Information button to view the results of the modules communicating on the network.
    • Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs.
    • Does the TBM pass the Network Test?
      Yes No
Go to  S2. DIAGNOSE the scan tool does not communicate with the TBM. REFER to Module Communications Network (Except Hybrid) .
  2. S2: RECHECK FOR DTC U0137:00 AND U0137:87
    • Carry out the ABS self-test.
    • Clear the ABS DTCs.
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Ignition ON, engine OFF.
    • Carry out the ABS self-test.
    • Is DTC U0137:00, U0137:87 retrieved again?
      Yes No
Go to  S3. The system is operating correctly at this time. The DTC may have been set due to high network traffic or an intermittent fault condition.
  3. S3: CHECK FOR DTC U3003:16 AND U3003:17
    • Review the results from the ABS module self-test.
    • Is DTC U3003:16 or U3003:17 present?
      Yes No
For DTC U3003:16, Go to PINPOINT TEST A .
For DTC U3003:17, Go to PINPOINT TEST F .
      Go to  S4.
  4. S4: CHECK FOR TBM DTCS
    • Carry out the TBM self-test.
    • Are any DTCs present?
      Yes No
DIAGNOSE the TBM DTC. Go to  S5.
  5. S5: CHECK FOR DTC U0137:XX SET IN OTHER MODULES
    • Ignition OFF.
    • Retrieve the continuous memory DTCs.
    • Is DTC U0137:XX set in any other module in addition to the ABS module?
      Yes No
