DTC C1206-01: Wheel Speed Sensor Rear-LH Open/Short: General Description

2020 Kia Soul LX, Standard TransSECTION General Description

The ESC is the acronym for "Electronic Stability Control". The ESC is a braking system that combines the functions of a brake servo unit and the Antilock Braking System (ABS) equipment including Electronic Stability Control (ESC). The ESC is a technology that improves the safety of a vehicle's stability by detecting and reducing loss of traction. When ESC detects loss of a steering control, it automatically applies the brakes to help steer the vehicle where the driver intends to go. Braking is automatically applied to wheels individually. The ABS ECU supplies battery power to the electric motor by way of a motor relay which is controlled by the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The electric motor pump supplies hydraulic pressure to all wheel brake calipers by operating the piston inside the pump.

The Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS) are an essential component the ESC system. The WSS signals are used to calculate vehicle speed and to determine whether wheel lock occurs.
