HAZARDOUS MATERIALS (HAZMAT) INFORMATION
This bulletin provides basic information about hazardous materials regulations for all Kia dealerships. A hazardous material (or HazMat) is defined by the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, as "...a substance or material that the United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) has determined is capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported in commerce..." In accordance with the Kia Service Policies and Procedures Manual (SPPM), it is the responsibility of the management of every Kia dealership to ensure that its practices are in compliance with all applicable local, state, federal, and international laws and regulations.
All Kia vehicles sold in the United States contain parts that may be classified as HazMat. These parts include new or used service parts (including air bag inflators, seat belt pretensioners, Lithium-ion batteries, among others), as well as contaminated parts (any part that has conducted or contained liquid fuel, such as fuel pumps, lines, or tanks, among others). Information on Kia HazMat parts is contained in Materia Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) documents, which can be obtained at www.kdealer.net Parts > Parts Tech > MSDS, or by contacting the Parts Hotline. Every dealership team member who receives, packs, ships, or otherwise handles HazMat may be required by law to complete HazMat training within 90 days of beginning that function and every 3 years thereafter. Neither the U.S. DOT, nor Kia Motors America recommends a type or source of training. However, there are severs options for the training format (lectures, self guided instruction, conferences, and online training) and providers (HazMatU, ShipMate, Lion Technology, and SafetySkills, among others).
KMA, its suppliers, and its affiliates cannot legally accept inappropriately packaged, marked, or mislabeled HAZMAT shipments. Situations arising from these and other errors are time-consuming to resolve and may result in fines to the dealer by various government entities. In addition, if these situations cause financial losses to KMA, KMA may seek reimbursement for any added processing costs or delays.
When filling out a "Shippers Declaration for Dangerous Goods" for HazMat parts return to KMA or its affiliates and suppliers, dealerships may use KMA's emergency contact, CHEMTREC. To use CHEMTREC as the emergency contact, the following fields must be correctly filled out in the Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods:
1. The shipper field must begin with "Kia Motors America, C/O [dealership's name]" followed by the dealership's address and phone number.
2. The 24 HR Emergency Contact Telephone" should contain "CHEMTREC / +1-703-527-3887".

When to See a Mechanic
