- Parallel Parking Maneuver : Vehicle is positioned in-line with another parked car or cars.
- Perpendicular Parking Maneuver : Vehicle is positioned into a parking slot in the rearward direction.
The Parallel & Perpendicular Parking Assistance (PPPA) with Surround View system is intended to assist and not substitute the driver during parallel and perpendicular parking maneuvers through means of identifying a proper parking slot and controlling the steering wheel during the parallel and perpendicular parking maneuver. The system is defined as "semi-automatic" since the driver must stay in full control of the vehicle's longitudinal acceleration and is responsible for the vehicle's movements (i.e., the driver provides the accelerator and braking inputs). Depending on the driver's parking maneuver selection, the PPPA system is capable of maneuvering a vehicle into a parallel or a perpendicular parking slot on either side (i.e., driver side or passenger side).
The information regarding the presence and distance of an obstacle is transmitted to the driver in the form of an audible alert and graphic display on the Display Screen Module (DSM). The audible alert is pulsed at a rate dependent on distance to the detected obstacle. The closer the obstacle the more rapid the audible alert becomes.
