Piston & Rod Assembly: Installation

  1. Measure ring gap. Install rings on piston and measure ring side clearance with feeler gauge. Ring gaps should be positioned as illustrated. See Fig 1. Lubricate journals and bearing inserts with a thin film of engine oil.

  2. Insert rod and piston assembly into cylinder so that arrows on top of piston face toward front of engine. Position connecting rod with upper bearing insert into place against crankshaft journal. Install lower bearing insert and cap. Tighten cap nuts. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation.
NOTE: Arrows on top of piston must point toward front of engine. Oil squirt holes in rod must face camshaft when installed.
