Starter - PARIS-RHONE: Operation
1986 Jeep Cherokee Chief, 4D Utility, 2.8 W, AutomaticSECTION Operation
- With ignition switch in "S" position, battery voltage is applied from fusible link "D", to ignition switch, and to the coil of the starter relay to ground.
- For vehicles equipped with manual transmission, a grounding strap from the starter relay is used. On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, current flows to ground through the back-up/neutral safety switch.
- The coil of the starter relay energizes, closing relay contacts. With contacts closed, battery voltage is applied to the starter solenoid. Both windings within solenoid are energized.
- The circuit through the pull-in windings is completed to ground through the starter motor. The windings work together magnetically to pull in the starter gear into the ring gear.
- At the same time, the plunger also closes the solenoid switch contacts in the starter solenoid. Full battery voltage is applied directly to the starter motor and it cranks the engine. See Fig 1.
