Transmission Disassembly

1986 Jeep Cherokee Base, 4D Utility, 2.5 H, 4WD, Standard, AX4SECTION Transmission Disassembly
  1. Remove release fork and bearing. Remove clutch housing bolts. Separate clutch housing from transmission case.
  2. Use Torx bit to remove detent plug. Use pencil magnet to remove detent spring and ball. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . Remove 5 bolts and the nut holding adapter housing to intermediate plate.
  3. Remove shift arm set bolt and lock plate. Remove shift arm pivot shaft plug from back of adapter housing. Using a large magnet, remove shift arm pivot shaft. Use plastic hammer to tap and remove extension or adapter housing from intermediate plate.
  4. Remove front bearing retainer snap rings. Use plastic hammer to tap and remove intermediate plate and front bearing retainer. Remove transmission case.
