Starter Resistance Test - On Vehicle

1986 Jeep Cherokee Base, 4D Utility, 2.5 H, 4WD, Standard, AX4SECTION Starter Resistance Test - On Vehicle
  1. Disconnect positive battery cable. Connect an ammeter (0-300 scale) between disconnected battery lead and battery terminal. Connect a voltmeter between positive battery post and starter relay terminal on starter solenoid.
  2. Crank engine and check meter readings. Voltage should not exceed .3 volt. A reading higher than .3 volt indicates high resistance in the starting system. If current is high and starter cranks slowly, starter is defective.
