Bench Testing: Armature

CAUTION:
Some starters have a molded-type commutator. DO NOT undercut insulation, as serious damage to commutator may result.
- Test armature for shorted coils with a growler. Check for grounded coils with a test light. Place one lead on armature shaft and other lead on commutator. Test light should not come on. If test light comes on, armature is grounded and should be replaced.
- Turn commutator in a lathe if it is rough, worn, or has protruding insulation. Sand commutator lightly with 240 grit emery paper and clean out slots.
