Observe these precautions when working with air bag systems:

  • Disable air bag system before servicing any air bag or steering column component. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEMΒ .
  • Wait 20 minutes after disabling air bag system before servicing. Air bag system voltage is maintained for about 20 minutes after system is disabled. Failure to wait 20 minutes before servicing system may cause accidental air bag deployment and possible personal injury.
  • Because of critical operating requirements of system, DO NOT service any air bag component. Repair is made by replacement only.
  • DO NOT allow grease, oil, cleaning solutions or similar substances to contact air bag units.
  • DO NOT subject air bag units to temperatures warmer than 195Β°F (90Β°C).
  • Replace air bag units, impact sensors and control units which have fallen from a height of 1.5 feet or more.
  • DO NOT install additional trim, labels or stickers on steering wheel or in area of passenger-side air bag.
  • DO NOT repair or modify air bag system wiring.
  • Air bag system must be disabled before electric welding can be performed on vehicle.
  • DO NOT route wires from other electrical equipment in vicinity of air bag wire harness.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling deployed air bags.

When to See a Mechanic
