DTC P0501 - Vehicle Speed Sensor Range (ELANTRA)

1998 Hyundai Tiburon Base, AutomaticSECTION DTC P0501 - Vehicle Speed Sensor Range (ELANTRA)
  1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Install scan tool to data link connector and check for DTCs. If DTC P0501 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0501 is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TESTS W/O CODES article.
  2. Inspect speedometer cable and cable drive gear. If cable and gear are okay, go to next step. If cable and/or gear are not okay, replace faulty parts and go to step 9).
  3. Disconnect VSS harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and VSS sensor harness connector "A", terminal No. 8 (STD) or No. 10 (DLX). See VSS WIRE COLORS table. If 5 volts exists, go to step 5). If 5 volts does not exist, go to next step.
  4. Measure voltage between ground and VSS sensor harness connector "B", terminal No. 3 (STD) or No. 5 (DLX). If 5 volts exists, go to next step. If 5 volts does not exist, go to step 6).
  5. Check continuity between ground and VSS harness connector "B" (STD) or "C" (DLX), terminal No. 12 (STD) or No. 7 (DLX). If continuity exists, go to step 7). If continuity does not exist, repair open in wire between VSS and ground.
  6. Check for continuity between VSS harness connector A, terminal No. 10 (STD) or No. 8 (DLX) and ECM harness connector terminal No. 42 (Yellow/White wire). Also, check for continuity between VSS harness connector "B", terminal No. 5 (STD) or No. 3 (DLX) and ECM harness terminal No. 42. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair Yellow/White wire between VSS and ECM.
  7. Inspect instrument cluster terminals and electrical routes. If terminals or electrical routes are damaged, replace instrument cluster. If terminals and electrical routes are not damaged, go to next step.
  8. After repairs, clear DTC. See CLEARING CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in TESTS W/CODES - INTRODUCTION article. Retest system. If DTC resets, replace ECM. If DTC does not reset, system is okay.
