Air Temperature Sensor ( Ambient / Intake ): Testing and Inspection

1991 Hyundai Sonata V6-3.0LSECTION Testing and Inspection

Air Flow Sensor Location:

Intake Air Temperature Sensor:

To test the Air Temperature Sensor (Intake), located on the air flow sensor, in the air cleaner housing. Remove the air flow sensor (AFS) connector and proceed as follows.

Intake Air Temperature Test Hook-up:

1. Measure the resistance between terminals 4 and 6.
Terminals 4: Intake air temperature output
Terminals 6: Sensor ground
Standard Values
Ambient Sensor
Temperature(°F) Resistance(Ohm)
32..................5.4 - 6.6 kohms
68..................2.33 - 2.97 kohms
176..................0.31 - 0.43 kohms

Intake Air Temperature Test:

2. Measure the resistance while heating the sensor using a hair drier. You should observe a reduction in resistance (less Ohms) in response to an increase in temperature at the sensor.
3. If the value deviates from the standard value or the resistance remains unchanged, replace the air flow sensor assembly.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • β€’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • β€’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • β€’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • β€’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • β€’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
