Engine Compression Inspection
2009 Honda S2000 BaseSECTION Engine Compression Inspection
NOTE:
- 2000-2005 models: After this inspection, you must reset the engine control module (ECM) using the Honda Diagnostic System (HDS) (see HOW TO RESET THE ECM ), to clear any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
- 2006-09 model: After this inspection, you must reset the ECM using the HDS (see HDS CLEAR COMMAND ), otherwise the ECM continues to stop the fuel injectors.
- Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature (cooling fan comes on).
- Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- 2000-2005 models: Remove the No. 2 (15 A) fuse from the under-dash fuse/relay box.
- 2006-09 models: Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (see GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION ).
- 2006-09 models :Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
- 2006-09 models : Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the ECM. If it doesn't, troubleshoot the DLC circuit (see DLC CIRCUIT TROUBLESHOOTING ).
- 2006-09 models: Select PGM-FI, INSPECTION, then ALL INJECTORS OFF on the HDS.
- 2006-09 models. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
- Remove the four ignition coils (see IGNITION COIL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
- Remove the four spark plugs.
- Attach the compression gauge to the spark plug hole.
- Stop on the accelerator pedal to open the throttle fully, then crank the engine with the starter motor and measure the compression.
Compression Pressure:Β
Above 930 kPa (9.5 kgf/cm, 135 psi)Β
- Measure the compression on the remaining cylinders.
Maximum Variation:Β
Within 200 kPa (2.0 kgf/cm, 28 psi)Β
- If the compression is not within specifications, check the following items, then remeasure the compression.
- Incorrect valve clearance
- Confirmation of cam timing
- Damaged or worn cam lobes
- Damaged or worn valves and seats
- Damaged cylinder head gasket
- Damaged or worn piston rings
- Damaged or worn piston and cylinder bore
- Remove the compression gauge from the spark plug hole.
- Install the four spark plugs.
- Install the four ignition coils
- 2000-2005 models: Reinstall the No. 2 (15 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box.
- Select ECM reset using the HDS:
- 2000-2005 models (see HOW TO RESET THE ECM )
- 2006-08 model (see HDS CLEAR COMMAND )
- Do the ECM idle learn procedure:
- 2000-2005 models (see IDLE SPEED INSPECTION )
- 2006-08 model (see ECM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE )
