Cranking Solenoid Valve

NOTE: Perform this test on hot engine. Test is for Accord and Civic only.
  1. Ground the coil secondary wire to prevent the engine from starting. Turn the ignition to "START" position. The throttle controller arm should retract when the engine is cranked. If the controller operates, the cranking solenoid valve is functional. Test is complete.
  2. If the controller does not operate, check for voltage at the cranking solenoid valve. Check at Control Box No. 1, Green wire on Civic. Check at connector Blue/Red wire on Accord. If no voltage is present, check wiring and fuse.
  3. On Accord, if there are no defects, replace the starter relay located on the relay bracket. On all models, if voltage is present, disconnect the hose between the cranking solenoid valve and and check valve at the solenoid valve. Check for vacuum when cranking engine.
  4. There should be vacuum with the ignition switch turned to "START" position. If there is vacuum, replace the cranking solenoid valve and retest. If there is no vacuum, check the vacuum line for leaks or blockage. If they are okay, replace the check valve and retest.
