2011 GMC Savana Special 4.8 ASECTION Removal Procedure

  1. Disable the SIR System. Refer to SIR Disabling and EnablingΒ .
  2. CAUTION: With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock, or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:
    • The steering column
    • The intermediate shaft(s)
    • The steering gear

    After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has became un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.
  3. Verify the following:
    • The wheels on the vehicle are straight ahead.
    • The J-42640:Β  pin is installed or the ignition switch is in the LOCK position.
  4. Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .

  6. If equipped with a tilt column, pull the tilt lever straight out from the steering column.
  7. Remove the steering column trim covers. Refer to Steering Column Trim Cover Replacement .
  8. Remove the wire harness straps from the steering wheel column wire harness.

  10. Remove the retaining ring (3).
  11. Remove the SIR coil (4) from the steering shaft.
