Ignition Coil(S): Installation

1999 GMC Forward Control 5.7 R, AutomaticSECTION Installation
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue and 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: DO NOT re-install any component that has visible signs of damage. Inspect the boots for a missing or damaged internal spring. Ensure that the boots are installed right-side up. Ensure that the ignition cassette-to-cam cover ground spring is in place. Repair a torn perimeter seal with an RTV sealant. Clean all the mounting surfaces before re-installing any components.
  1. Install ICM on the ignition coils. Install the ICM retaining screws. Tighten the retaining screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ . Install the cover on the ignition coils. Install the boots on the ignition coils until the boots bottom out.
  2. Install the cassette assembly straight down onto the spark plugs. If this is not possible on the rear bank due to space limitations, just-start the boots onto the spark plugs, and then align and start the ignition coil towers into the boots. Press the ignition cassette down on the plugs as straight as possible.
  3. Install the 7 bolts that retain the ignition coil cassette to the valve cover. Tighten the bolts to specification. Connect the electrical connector to the ICM. If the oil level indicator tube was moved during disassembly, move the tube back into position and install the retaining bolt. Tighten the retaining bolt to specification.
  4. Keeping the injector sight shield as level as possible, place the rear of the shield under the mounting bracket. Align and press the injector sight shield onto the mounting studs. Install the mounting nuts onto the mounting studs. Tighten the mounting nuts to specification.
