Removal Procedure

1999 GMC Forward Control 5.7 R, AutomaticSECTION Removal Procedure

  1. Set the tires in a straight-ahead position. Center the steering wheel.
  2. Remove the SIR module. Refer to STEERING WHEEL in Air Bag Restraint Systems.
  3. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel ReplacementΒ .
  4. Remove the SIR coil. Refer to SIR COIL ASSEMBLY in Air Bag Restraint Systems.
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Battery.
  6. Using a thin-bladed screwdriver, remove the lock cylinder bezel.

  8. Remove the shroud fasteners.
  9. Remove the upper and lower shrouds.

  11. Depress the lock tabs on the left and right multi-function levers. Remove the multi-function levers.

  13. Disconnect the electrical housing electrical connectors.

  15. Disengage the retaining tabs on the park lock cable assembly. Remove the assembly from the ignition module.
  16. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.

  18. Remove the lock housing bolts.

  20. Remove the lock housing. Slide the bracket from the column.

  22. Remove the knee bolster bolts. Unsnap the knee bolster.

  24. Disconnect the electric power steering (EPS) electrical connectors from the EPS controller.

  26. Remove the lower column mounting bolt.
