Removal Procedure

1999 GMC Forward Control 5.7 R, AutomaticSECTION Removal Procedure

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3 in SIR.
  2. CAUTION: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Cautions and Notices.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Remove the console. Refer to Console Replacement .
  5. Remove the I/P accessory trim plate. Refer to Trim Plate Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) Accessory .
  6. Remove the driver knee bolster trim panel. Refer to Trim Panel Replacement - Knee Bolster .
  7. Remove the ignition switch housing bracket and reposition the ignition switch. Refer to Ignition Switch Housing Bracket Replacement .
  8. Release the ignition switch and hazard warning switch wiring harness retainers from the driver knee bolster bracket.
  9. IMPORTANT: The following step must be performed to assure proper trim fit during installation.
  10. Mark the location of the driver knee bolster bracket. Refer to Instrument Panel (I/P) Disassembly Precautions .

  12. Remove the retaining screws from the driver knee bolster bracket.
  13. Remove the driver knee bolster bracket.

  15. Remove the left lower closeout panel. Refer to Closeout/Insulator Panel Replacement - Left .
  16. Tilt the steering wheel to the lowest position.
  17. Remove the upper and lower nuts retaining the steering column to the steering column bracket. Carefully rest the steering column on the I/P lower support beam. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  18. Remove the left windshield side garnish molding. Refer to Windshield Side Garnish Molding Replacement in Interior Trim.
  19. Remove the I/P upper trim pad. Refer to Trim Pad Replacement - Instrument Panel (I/P) Upper .
  20. Remove the outlet duct from the left side window defogger.
  21. Remove the instrument panel cluster. Refer to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Replacement .
  22. Disconnect the Bose® module electrical/audio connector, if equipped.
