Assemble
1991 GMC G 3500 1 Ton Van V8-379 6.2L DSLSECTION Assemble
1. Install fourth clutch outer seal onto piston and fourth clutch inner seal into housing.
2. Place seal protector tool No. J-38731-1 or equivalent onto housing small end, per figure.
3. Place seal protector tool No. J-38731-2 or equivalent, onto piston through large end.
4. Place spacer tool No. J-38731-3 or equivalent, inside of piston.
5. Place housing on bench, resting on piston and piston spacer.
6. Push and rotate down on housing until piston is through housing, exposing snap ring groove.
7. Remove housing seal protector tool.
8. Place snap ring, spring and retainer assembly onto piston.
9. Compress spring and retainer assembly using fourth clutch spring compressor adapter tool No. J-38882 and base, bolt and nut tool No. J-23327 or equivalents, then install snap ring and remove tools.
10. Turn assembly over and install four of each clutch plates alternating steel and fiber plates, starting with steel first. Locate steel plate index notch opposite fourth clutch bolt hole.
11. Install backing plate, flat side down, with notch location same as steel plates.
12. Install snap ring. Ensure snap ring is properly seated in groove.
13. Place fourth clutch assembly with spring and retainer assembly facing up.
14. Place feeler gauge between backing plate and snap ring. Measurement should be 0.040 - 0.100 inch.
