Transmission Disassembly

1984 GMC Suburban K2500, 5.7 M, StandardSECTION Transmission Disassembly
  1. Mount transmission in holding fixture. Remove transmission cover assembly-to-case bolts. If required, insert 2 bolts in cover flange threaded holes and turn bolts evenly to raise cover dowel pins from case.
  2. Move reverse shift fork so reverse idler gear is partially engaged before removing cover assembly. Remove cover assembly. Place transmission in 2 gears at once to lock gears.
  3. Remove yoke and parking brake drum assembly (if equipped). On 4WD models, use Main Bearing Lock Nut Socket (J-35907) to remove mainshaft rear bearing lock nut. See Fig 1.
  4. On all models, remove rear bearing retainer and gasket. Slide speedometer drive gear off mainshaft. Remove drive gear bearing retainer and gasket from case. Remove countergear front bearing cap and gasket. Pry countergear front bearing out by inserting 2-Pronged Puller (J-28509) through cast slots in case.
  5. Remove countergear rear bearing retaining ring from countergear shaft and bearing. Using Puller (J-8433-1) with Bearing Puller (J-22832), remove countergear rear bearing. See Fig 2. Let countergear assembly rest on bottom of case.
