Drive Axle - 7.5, 8.5, 9.5: Identification

General Motors uses several types axles. The 7 1/2", 8 1/2" and 9 1/2" axles can be distinguished from others by the configuration of housing covers and by the number of attaching bolts. To determine drive axle ratio, see DRIVE AXLE RATIO IDENTIFICATION article.
