Differential Carrier: Removal

2021 Ford Edge SE, 4WDSECTION Removal

  1. Remove the axle shafts and seals. Refer to: Axle Shaft SealΒ .
    1. Remove and discard the sector shaft arm drag link cotter pin
    2. Remove the sector shaft arm drag link nut retainer.

  2. Remove the sector shaft arm drag link and tie rod nut.

  3. Disconnect the RH outer tie rod end and drag link from the wheel knuckle. Use Special Service Tool: 211-023 (T74P-3044-A1) C-Frame and Screw.

  4. NOTE: Be prepared to collect escaping fluid.

    Remove the bolts and the differential housing cover. Drain the lubricant

  5. NOTE: Remove all of the silicone gasket and make sure the surfaces are free of oil before applying the new silicone gasket.

    Clean the gasket material from the differential housing and the differential housing cover. Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation .

  6. NOTE: Prior to removal, note the positioning of the stamped mating letters on the bearing caps and the differential housing for correct reassembly.

    Remove the bolts and the bearing caps.

  7. Using a pry bar and the general equipment, remove the differential assembly from the axle housing.. Use the General Equipment: Wooden Block
