Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Module
The ABS module is attached directly to the HCU and is the ECU for all of the ABS and stability control systems. The ABS module monitors all sensor inputs and all CAN messages relating to ABS and stability control, then directly controls the solenoid valves and the hydraulic pump motor in the HCU.
When a new ABS and HCU assembly is installed, they must be programmed with the vehicle configuration information and programmed with the latest level of module software. Refer to: Module Configuration - 2.0L Duratec - Hybrid (96kW/130PS) - System Operation and Component Description .
When an ABS or stability control system fault has been corrected or a new component has been installed, the ABS module must be calibrated. The calibration procedures are required for the brake system to operate correctly and for the stability control sensors to learn the zero-position of the vehicle. The calibration procedures require the vehicle to be on a level surface and not moving.
The following 5 calibration routines must be performed:
- Inlet Valve Calibration
- Master Cylinder Isolation Calibration
- Multi-Calibration
- Interactive Vehicle Dynamics (IVD) Initialization
- EPB Apply and Release
All 5 routines are carried out using a diagnostic scan tool, make sure to follow all diagnostic scan tool directionsΒ .

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
