Safety Warning
DIY auto repair can cause serious injury, fire, or vehicle damage. These guides are for informational purposes only. Always follow OEM torque specs, wear PPE, and consult a certified mechanic if you are unsure. You are solely responsible for your safety.
Electronic Shift Control System
4WD mode is selected using a rotary switch located on the instrument panel. With the vehicle ignition on, the on-board controller verifies and matches the shift motor position to the switch.
To shift in and out of 4WD low, 3 conditions must be met:
- The automatic transmission must be in NEUTRAL or the manual clutch depressed. On vehicles equipped with manual transmissions, the clutch pedal must be fully depressed with the vehicle stopped in order to make a range shift from 4WD high (4H) to 4WD low (4L), or from 4L to 4H. The automatic digital transmission range (TR) sensor completes the start circuit in PARK and NEUTRAL and the neutral sense circuit (4WD only) in NEUTRAL.
- The brake must be applied. The brake must be depressed in order to make a range shift from 4H to 4L or back.
- The vehicle speed must be less than 5 km/h (3 mph).
