Removal and Installation

2007 Ford Escape Base, 2.3 Z, FWD, AutomaticSECTION Removal and Installation

    All vehicles 

  1. Remove the rear halfshafts. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  2. Remove the muffler and tailpipe assembly. For additional information, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  3. NOTE:
    1. Index-mark the driveshaft before disconnecting from the rear axle.
    2. Install new driveshaft bolts when installing the driveshaft.
  4. Remove and discard the 6 driveshaft bolts.
    • To install, tighten to 27 N.m (20 lb-ft).
  5. Disconnect the rear wheel speed sensor electrical connector.

  6. Disconnect the rear drive axle electrical connector and remove the harness from the subframe.

  7. Five Hundred/Montego 

  8. Remove the 4 retainers holding the sway bar to the subframe and disconnect the sway bar links. Position the sway bar forward.
  9. Freestyle 

  10. Remove the rear sway bar. For additional information, refer to REAR SUSPENSION .
  11. All vehicles 

  12. Remove the rear subframe cross brace.
    • To install, tighten to 63 N.m (46 lb-ft).

  13. Remove the axle front insulator bolt.
    • To install, tighten to 90 N.m (66 lb-ft).
  14. CAUTION: Use care when removing or installing the assembly in the vehicle.
