The message center does not operate correctly	Circuitry Instrument cluster	GO to PINPOINT TEST A .
The message center display is inoperative	Instrument cluster	VERIFY that the message center display mode is turned on, then CARRY OUT the instrument cluster self-diagnostic test to illuminate all segments of the message center display. If the message center display is illuminated, the system is working correctly at this time. If the message center display is inoperative, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .
The service 4x4 warning display is never/always on (Escape, Mariner)	4-wheel drive system	REFER to FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEMS to continue diagnosis of the 4-wheel drive system.
The park brake on warning display is never/always on	Circuitry Parking brake switch Smart junction box (SJB) Instrument cluster	CHECK the operation of the brake warning indicator. If the brake warning indicator operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation. If the brake warning indicator does not operate correctly, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER to continue diagnosis of the brake warning indicator.
The low brake fluid display in inoperative	Circuitry Anti-lock brake system (ABS) module Instrument cluster	CHECK the operation of the brake warning indicator. If the brake warning indicator operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation. If the brake warning indicator does not operate correctly, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER to continue diagnosis of the brake warning indicator.
The door ajar display is inoperative	Door ajar switch Smart junction box (SJB) Instrument cluster	TURN the ignition switch to the ON position and CHECK the operation of the interior lamps. If the interior lamps operate correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation. If the interior lamps do not operate correctly, REFER to INTERIOR LIGHTING to continue diagnosis of the interior lamps.
The low fuel level warning display is inoperative	Circuitry Instrument cluster	CHECK the operation of the fuel gauge. If the fuel gauge operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation. If the fuel gauge does not operate correctly, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER to continue diagnosis of the fuel gauge.
The check exterior lamps display is inoperative	Smart junction box (SJB) Instrument cluster	VERIFY that the SJB is correctly configured for the lamp outage. REFER to MODULE CONFIGURATION . TEST the system for normal operation.
The check exterior lamps display is inoperative	Smart junction box (SJB) Instrument cluster	CHECK the operation of the exterior lamps. If all of the exterior lamps operate correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation. If any exterior lamp does not operate correctly, REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING to continue diagnosis of the exterior lamps.
The check fuel cap display is inoperative	Powertrain control module (PCM) Instrument cluster	RETRIEVE the DTCs. If DTC U1900 is retrieved. REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK to continue diagnosis of the communication network. If no DTCs are retrieved. INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
The turn signal on warning display is inoperative	Turn signals Instrument cluster	GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
The check brake lamps warning display is never/always on	Instrument cluster Smart junction box (SJB)	CHECK the correct operation of the stoplamps. If the stoplamps operate correctly, RETRIEVE the DTCs. If DTC U1900 is retrieved. REFER to MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK to continue diagnosis of the communication network. If no DTCs are retrieved and the stoplamps operate correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation. If the stoplamps do not operate correctly, REFER to EXTERIOR LIGHTING to continue diagnosis of the stoplamps.
The service emission system display is inoperative	Circuitry Powertrain control module (PCM) Instrument cluster	REFER to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE article or INTRODUCTION -- HYBRID ESCAPE & HYBRID MARINER article to continue diagnosis.
The high engine temperature, high engine temperature with performance reduced, and high engine temperature with stop engine safely display is inoperative	Circuitry Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor Powertrain control module (PCM) Instrument cluster	For Escape/Mariner, TURN the ignition switch to the ON position and OBSERVE the operation of the engine temperature gauge. If the engine temperature gauge operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . If the engine temperature gauge does not operate correctly, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER to continue diagnosis of the engine temperature gauge.
		For Escape Hybrid, CHECK if the overtemp warning indicator is illuminated. If the overtemp warning indicator is illuminated, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . If the overtemp warning indicator is not illuminated, REFER to the INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE article or INTRODUCTION -- HYBRID ESCAPE & HYBRID MARINER article to continue diagnosis.
The message center switch does not operate correctly	Circuitry Message center switch(es) Instrument cluster	GO to PINPOINT TEST C .
The compass is inoperative	Fuse Circuitry Compass sensor module Instrument cluster	GO to PINPOINT TEST D .
The compass is inaccurate	Zone setting Calibration Vehicle magnetization Compass sensor module	GO to PINPOINT TEST E .
The speed control ON message display is inoperative (Escape Hybrid)	Powertrain control module (PCM) Instrument cluster	GO to PINPOINT TEST F .
The 4X4 ENGAGED message is never/always on (Escape Hybrid)	Circuitry Four-wheel drive module Instrument cluster	GO to PINPOINT TEST G .
The LOW TIRE PRESSURE, TIRE MONITOR FAULT, or TIRE SENSOR FAULT warning is incorrect	Circuitry Smart junction box (SJB) Instrument cluster	OBSERVE the operation of the low tire pressure warning indicator. If the low tire pressure warning indicator operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation. If the low tire pressure warning indicator does not operate correctly, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER to continue diagnosis of the low tire pressure warning indicator.
