Valve Cover: Removal

2004 Ford Focus ZX3, 2.3 Z, StandardSECTION Removal
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  2. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.

  3. Position aside the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor boot.

  4. Disconnect the CHT sensor electrical connector.

  5. Disconnect the coil-on-plug electrical connectors.

  6. Remove the ignition coils.
    1. Remove the ignition coil bolts.
    2. While rotating, pull the ignition coils straight up.

  7. Disconnect the breather tube from the valve cover.

  8. Disconnect the wiring harness retainers from the valve cover studs and position aside.

  9. Detach the fuel injection supply manifold wiring harness from the valve cover.

  10. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors.

  11. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator electrical connector and the vacuum hose.

  12. Disconnect the upper HO2S electrical connector.

  13. Disconnect the wiring connector.
    • Remove the two wire connectors from the bracket.
    • Remove the bracket bolt and position it aside.

  14. Remove the bolts and the valve cover.

  15. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.
  16. Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
