Safety Warning
DIY auto repair can cause serious injury, fire, or vehicle damage. These guides are for informational purposes only. Always follow OEM torque specs, wear PPE, and consult a certified mechanic if you are unsure. You are solely responsible for your safety.
Relationship Between MIL, DTC & Detectable Items
When a fault is detected for the first time, DTC and freeze frame data are stored in PCM memory. When fault is detected in 2 consecutive trips, MIL will illuminate. MIL will turn off after vehicle is driven 3 times with no fault detected. The drive is counted only when recorded driving pattern is met (as stored in PCM). If another fault occurs while counting, the counter will reset. MIL will remain on until vehicle is driven 3 times with no fault.
DTC and freeze frame data can be displayed until vehicle is driven 40 times (except for misfire and fuel injection system). Misfire and fuel injection system DTC and freeze frame data can be displayed until vehicle is driven 80 times.
