1997 Ford Explorer 4D Utility, 4.0 E, 4WDSECTION Pinpoint Test A - Windshield Washer Inoperative
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Mercury Villager. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure reservoir is full. Operate washer switch. If washer pump is inoperative, go to next step. If washer pump operates but fluid does not squirt from nozzles, inspect pump, nozzles, and hoses for blockage. Repair as necessary.
  2. Turn ignition on. Disconnect washer pump connector. Connector is located on right front inner fender. Measure voltage between ground and Black/White wire at washer pump wiring harness connector. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Black/White wire between washer pump connector and fuse block.
  3. Turn ignition off. Connect a jumper wire between positive battery terminal and Black/White wire at washer pump. Connect another jumper wire between negative battery terminal and Yellow/Red wire at washer pump. If washer pump is inoperative, replace pump. If washer pump operates, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect Front Wiper/Washer Amplifier (FWWA) 6-pin connector. FWWA is located on left front strut tower. Measure resistance of Yellow/Red wire between washer pump connector and FWWA connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, locate and repair open in Yellow/Red wire.
  5. Test front wiper/washer switch. See WIPER/WASHER SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTSΒ  . Replace multifunction switch as necessary. If switch is okay, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect FWWA 4-pin connector. Disconnect multifunction switch 10-pin connector. Measure resistance of Pink/Blue wire between FWWA wiring harness connector and multifunction switch wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Pink/ Blue wire.
  7. Measure resistance of Pink/Blue wire between ground and multifunction switch wiring harness connector. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Pink/Blue wire.
  8. Measure resistance of Green wire between FWWA wiring harness connector and multifunction switch wiring harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in White wire or Green wire.
  9. Measure resistance of Green wire between ground and multifunction switch wiring harness connector. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short to ground in White wire or Green wire.
  10. Measure resistance of Black wire between ground and FWWA 4-pin wiring harness connector. Also, measure resistance of Black wire between ground and FWWA 6-pin wiring harness connector. If both resistances are less than 5 ohms, replace FWWA and check washer operation. If any resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire.
