Hall Effect Sensor: Service and Repair

1994 Ford Ranger 2WD L4-140 2.3L SOHCSECTION Service and Repair
NOTE: Special Service Tool number T89P-6316-A or equivalent is required for removal and installation of Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor.

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the CKP sensor harness connectors from the engine harness.
2. Remove the large electrical connector from the CKP sensor by prying out the red retaining clip and removing the four wires.
3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
4. Remove the four crankshaft pulley bolts and remove the crankshaft pulley.
5. Remove the engine front cover.

NOTE: The vanes are attached to the crankshaft pulley hub.

6. Rotate the crankshaft so that the keyway is located in the ten o'clock position. This will place the vane window of both (inner and outer) vane cups over the CKP sensor.

7. Remove the two retaining bolts, and the plastic wire harness retainer which secures the sensor harness to its mounting bracket.
8. Remove the crankshaft position sensor, sliding the electrical wires out from behind the inner engine front cover.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Make sure the four wires to the large electrical connector are installed in the proper locations as indicated. The sensor will not function properly if the wires are installed in the wrong locations.

1. Remove the large electrical connector from the new CKP sensor.
2. Position CKP sensor.
^ First slide electrical wires behind the inner engine front cover.
^ Then, hold the crankshaft position sensor loosely in place with the retaining bolts. DO NOT tighten bolts at this time.
3. Install the large electrical connector onto the CKP sensor.
4. Reconnect both of the CKP sensor electrical connectors to the engine harness.
5. Rotate the crankshaft such that the outer vane on the crankshaft pulley hub engages both sides of the Crankshaft Hall Effect Sensor Positioner (T89P-6316-A) and tighten the sensor retaining bolts to 22-30 In-lb (2.5-3.5 Nm).

6. Rotate the crankshaft such that the vane on the crankshaft pulley hub is no longer engaged in the positioning tool.
7. Remove Crankshaft Hall Effect Sensor Positioner (T89P-6316-A).
8. Install the new plastic wire harness retainer to secure the CKP sensor harness to it's mounting bracket. Trim off the excess.
9. Install engine front cover.
10. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the four bolts to 21-28 ft-lbs. (28-38 Nm).
11. Install the accessory drive belt.
