The Variable Assist Power Steering System (VAPS) automatically adjusts power steering pressure to provide light steering effort during low speed operation and parking, and high steering effort during high speeds to provide for better road feel.
The VAPS system uses a steering angle sensor and vehicle speed sensor, Fig. 1, to provide the control unit with input information, the control unit then adjusts the solenoid valve according to the inputs.
The control unit is equipped with a slide switch, Fig. 2, enabling a selection of normal operation or a 10% lighter or harder steering effort.
