1990 Ford Ranger 4WD L4-140 2.3L SOHCSECTION Shift Lever

Removal of the shift ball is necessary only if the shift ball, boot or lever is being replaced. If not, remove the ball, boot and lever as an assembly.

1. Remove plastic insert from shift ball, then warm ball to approximately 140-180°F and knock ball off lever with a hammer and a block of wood.
2. Remove rubber boot and pan cover, then disconnect vent hose from control lever.
3. Unscrew shift lever from control lever, then remove shifter to extension housing retaining bolts and the shoulder bolt. Remove control lever and bushings.
4. Reverse procedure to install. Note the following:
a. Torque shifter to extension housing retaining bolt to 31-42 ft. lbs. and shoulder bolt to 70-90 ft. lbs. The shifter retaining bolt must be tightened before the shoulder bolt.
b. Torque shift lever to 27-37 ft. lbs.
c. Install vent assembly so the white marking on housing is in line with notch in shifter. Position upper end of vent hose inside shift lever bolts.
d. Install shift ball to the end of knurl on upper part of shift lever.
