DRIVESHAFT - CENTER BEARING SUPPORT CROSSMEMBER - SERVICE PROCEDURE - ALL SUPERCAB MODELS

LIGHT TRUCK: 1989-90 RANGER
ISSUE: The original equipment driveshaft center bearing support crossmember is a two-piece riveted assembly. The two crossmember assemblies required for Ranger Supercab models are:
^ Crossmember Assembly (E9TZ-5A051-A) for 4x2 models
^ Crossmember Assembly (E9TZ-5A051-B) for 4x4 models
ACTION: Install a new crossmember assembly by using the following service procedure.
1. Remove the driveshaft from the truck. Refer to the appropriate model year Ranger Shop Manual, Section 05-01.
2. Remove the rivets from center bearing crossmember by drilling into rivet heads and chiseling off the heads.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE A CUTTING TORCH. A CUTTING TORCH MAY DAMAGE THE FRAME.
3. Install the new crossmember Assembly (-5A051-) as follows:
a. Line ream the attaching holes in the crossmember and frame to allow installation of (4) 7/16" bolts.
b. Free holes of burrs after reaming to allow bolt head and nut to seat properly.
c. Install (4) 7/16" bolts with (1) flat washer under each nut and (1) flat washer under each bolt head.
4. Tighten the four (4) bolts to 27-37 lb.ft. (37-50 N-m).
5. Reinstall the driveshaft.
6. Tighten the eight (8) new M-12 mm bolts (N800594-S100) at the axle and transfer case ends of the driveshaft to 61-87 lb.ft. (83-118 N-m).
7. Reinstall the attaching bolts and nuts at the driveshaft center bearing. Tighten to 27-37 lb.ft. (37-50 N-m).
8. Make sure the insulator rubber has not been deformed or twisted while tightening the center bearing attaching nuts and bolts.
