Test X

1988 Ford Aerostar Van Passenger, StandardSECTION Test X
NOTE: If a defective speedometer module is replaced, an "S" symbol is displayed in upper right-hand corner of speedometer display, and a sticker must be affixed to driver's door pillar showing previous mileage.

Before testing, note the following.

  • Warning tone is not active until engine reaches 600 RPM.
  • Warning tone generator will not respond if another sound is being produced.
  1. Turn ignition to "RUN" position. Depress each module switch ("GAUGE SELECT", "EXPAND FUEL", "ENGLISH/METRIC", etc.). If tone is produced for all switches, system is okay.
  2. If tone is not produced when any module switches are depressed, go to step 3). If tone is produced for some switches, go to step 7).
  3. Check for "fasten seat belt" and "key in ignition" warning tones. If tones are produced, go to step 4). If tones are not produced, repair/replace tone generator module and recheck cluster operation.
  4. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove cluster and secure connectors from shorting. Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to "RUN" position. Verify that "fasten seat belt" warning tone is operating.
  5. After tone has stopped, connect a jumper between pin 2B and ground, and listen for tone (test 1). See Figure . Remove jumper wire. Connect a jumper between pin 6B and ground, and listen for a tone (test 2).
  6. If tone is produced during both tests, replace tach/multigauge module and recheck cluster operation. If tone is not produced in either test, correct open in circuit 183 (pin 2B) and recheck cluster operation.
  7. Identify which switch groups do not produce a tone when depressed. If "ENGLISH/METRIC", "TRIP DIST" and "TRIP RESET" switches (speedo/odometer wiring circuit) do not produce a tone, go to step 8). If "GAUGE SELECT" and "EXPAND FUEL" switches (tach/multigauge wiring circuit) do not produce a tone, go to step 11).
  8. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove cluster and secure connectors from shorting. Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to "RUN" position. Verify that "fasten seat belt" warning tone is operating.
  9. After tone has stopped, connect a jumper between pin 2B and ground. If tone is produced, replace speedo/odometer module and recheck cluster operation.
  10. If tone is not produced, correct open in circuit 183 (between pin 2B and tone generator) and recheck cluster operation.
  11. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove cluster and secure connectors from shorting. Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition to "RUN" position. Verify that "fasten seat belt" warning tone is operating.
  12. After warning tone has stopped, connect a jumper between pin 6C and ground. If tone is produced, replace tachometer/multigauge module and recheck cluster operation. If tone is not produced, correct open in circuit 183 (between pin 6C and tone generator) and recheck cluster operation.
