1987 Ford Bronco II 4WD V6-177 2.9LSECTION A/T - A4LD Slipping Under Acceleration
TSB 88-11 (Feb)
SUBJECT: FORD A4LD
PROBLEM:
Passing gear neutrals, or after coastdown before stopping, re-acceleration gives a neutral condition.
POSSIBLE CAUSE: Defective overdrive sprag
POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
The overdrive sprag in the A4LD works the same as many other overdrive transmissions in that it must lock, or hold in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears, and must free-wheel in 4th gear.

As long as the selector is in the D4 position, the overdrive sprag will also free-wheel when coasting. Many times "weak" or "borderline" sprag's will fail to lock after the sprag has been free-wheeling and suddenly must lock, under a load such as a 4th to 3rd, or 4th to 2nd forced downshift or re-acceleration after a coastdown. This failure to lock will cause a neutral condition.
