TRANSMISSION - A4LD - ADDITION OF SPRING IN THE CONVERTER CHANNEL - TRANSMISSION BUILD CODE
DATES 8/21/91 AND LATER

FORD: 1992 and prior MUSTANG

LIGHT TRUCK: 1992 and prior AEROSTAR, EXPLORER, RANGER

ISSUE: A spring was installed in the transmission case worm trail to trap large machining chips and reduce engine stall complaints caused by the stuck converter lock-up valve in the main control of the transmission. This spring should not be installed in transmissions built prior to 8/21/91.

ACTION: If disassembly and assembly of the A4LD automatic transmission is required, make sure that the following service items are considered.

^ Transmissions built prior to 8/21/91 do not have a spring in the case channel and should not have one installed.

^ Transmissions built 8/21/91 and later should have the spring reinstalled if the transmission was disassembled.

^ Refer to the 1992 Ranger/Explorer/Aerostar Service Manual or the 1992 Mustang Service Manual, Section 07-01A, for service details.
