Air Induction

1984 Ford Mustang LX, 2D Hatchback, 5.0 MSECTION Air Induction

Air entering the engine flows through the air vane meter. The air vane meter measures air flow and temperature for the ECA which uses the information to assist in determining air/fuel ratio.

The air flow is then directed to the turbocharger (2.3L only) and the throttle body. The throttle body controls air flow to the engine through a single, butterfly-type valve.

Fig 1: 1.6L Engine Air Induction System Air induction system for the 2.3L is similar except the air vane meter is on the right front fender.

An air by-pass channel is incorporated into the throttle body to satisfy both cold and warm idle airflow requirements when the throttle valve is in a fully closed position.

Airflow through the by-pass channel is controlled by the air by-pass valve which is mounted directly to the throttle body. Air by-pass valve function is controlled by signals from the ECA.
