Rear Axles - Separate Housing: Overhaul: Disassembly

- Mark differential bearing caps for reassembly, then remove caps, adjusting nut locks, and adjusting nuts. Remove differential assembly from carrier. Remove side bearings from case with suitable puller. Remove ring gear attaching bolts and tap ring gear from case.
- On 2-pinion differential assemblies, drive out differential pinion shaft retaining pin and separate the case. Drive out pinion shaft with a brass drift and remove side gears, washers, and pinions.
- Remove pinion shaft nut, companion flange, seal and retainer from housing with suitable driver. Measure and record shim thickness with a micrometer.NOTE: If new gear set is installed during assembly, a new shim will have to be installed. Original shim thickness is necessary to determine new shim thickness.
Using a suitable press, press pinion shaft out of front and rear bearing cones.
NOTE: Replace pinion bearing cups only if worn or damaged.
