Rack & Pinion: Reassembly

1990 Eagle Talon Base, AutomaticSECTION Reassembly
  1. Apply ATF (Dexron or Dexron-II) to back-up washer/oil seal and press into rack housing. Apply ATF to valve housing, needle roller bearing and oil seal press fitting surface. Press needle roller bearing into valve housing, using care to keep bearing straight in bore.
  2. Press ball bearing into valve housing. Install oil seal ring and "O" ring onto rack. Apply ATF to outside of rack bushing oil seal and "O" ring. Press oil seal until it touches rack bushing end. Install "O" ring.
  3. Apply coating of Multipurpose Grease (2525035) to rack gears, using care to not plug vent hole at piston end of rack teeth. Cover rack teeth with Rack Cover (MB991213) and apply ATF to rack cover. Carefully align rack with center of oil seal and slowly insert rack from power cylinder side.
  4. Wrap end of rack with vinyl tape and coat tape with ATF. Slide rack bushing and rack stopper over rack. Insert circlip through slot in rack cylinder into hole in rack stopper. Turn rack stopper clockwise and insert circlip firmly.
  5. Apply ATF to pinion shaft oil seal and press into valve housing. Apply ATF to pinion shaft ball bearing and press into valve housing, behind oil seal. Apply ATF to 4 sealing rings and install firmly into grooves in pinion shaft.
  6. Use Sealing Ring Compressor (MB991317) to compress and seat sealing rings. Apply Multipurpose Grease (2525035) to pinion gear and housing bearing. Wrap vinyl tape around pinion shaft serrations. Apply ATF to sealing rings and carefully install pinion shaft into valve housing.
  7. Using suitable piece of tubing, press oil seal into valve housing. Outer surface of seal must project outward about .040" (1 mm) from valve housing edge surface. Install valve housing assembly.
  8. Apply Multipurpose Grease (2525035) to rack support surface in contact with rack. Install rack support and spring. Apply non-hardening sealer to rack support cover screw and install screw. Lock temporarily with lock nut.
  9. Install new self-locking nut to end of pinion shaft and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ  table. Apply non-hardening sealer to threads of end plug. Tighten end plug and stake end plug in 2 places using a punch.
  10. Adjust total pinion torque by first placing rack in center position. Using Rack Support Wrench (MB991204), tighten rack support cover screw to 11 ft. lbs. (15 N.m). Using Pinion Wrench (CT-1108), rotate pinion shaft clockwise one full turn in 4-6 seconds. Back off rack support cover screw 30-60 degrees and adjust torque to 11 INCH lbs. (1.3 N.m). Lock rack support cover screw with lock nut.
  11. Install feed tubes using new "O" rings. Install tie rods to rack, folding tab washers in 2 locations to tie rod notch. Reverse removal procedure to complete installation. Bleed system and check for leaks.
