CAUTION:

Removing the fill plug without adjusting the vehicle position will result in losing fluid for inspection purposes or incomplete refill when servicing the transfer case fluid.

The fill and drain plugs are both in the rear case.

  1. Place the vehicle on a ramp type vehicle lift and prepare to lift the rear of the vehicle relative to the ramp surface.
  2. Position drain pan under transfer case.
  3. Remove drain (1) and fill (2) plugs and drain lubricant completely.
  4. Install drain plug. Tighten plug to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ  .
  5. Remove drain pan.
  6. Position a suitable jack (1) under the rear of the vehicle.

  7. If not equipped with a skid plate, use the forward portion of the transmission pan (1) as a reference plane and lift the rear of the vehicle until the pan surface is level with the ground.

  8. If equipped with a skid plate covering the transmission pan, use the damper (1) at the rear of the transfer case as a reference plane and lift the rear of the vehicle until the damper is level with the ground.
    NOTE:

    The transfer case must be filled to the bottom edge of fill plug opening with the required fluid. Refer to CAPACITIES AND RECOMMENDED FLUIDS, SPECIFICATIONS .

  9. Once the vehicle is positioned with the driveline angle parallel to the ground, the fill plug can be removed to check fluid fill level or refill the transfer case to its correct 500 ml (.53 qt.) level.
  10. Install and tighten fill plug to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ  .
  11. Lower the vehicle.
