Motor Generator Unit (MGU)
| Refer to: COMPONENT INDEXΒ . |
The MGU is connected to the engines crankshaft pulley through a high tension serpentine belt. A newly designed hydraulic tensioner is used to control dynamic belt forces and maintain a constant belt tension.
The MGU has 3 separate functions:
- To act as a generator during normal driving conditions.
- To act as a regeneration charger during engine coast down and braking events.
- To act as an engine starter during and auto-start event following an auto-stop.
The MGU consists of the three phase motor, Motor Control Processor (MCP) and Hybrid Control Processor (HCP). The MCP and HCP control the operation of the MGU.
- The MCP controls the function of the three phase motor based on commands from the HCP.
- The HCP is the main module that communicates with other modules on the bus. The HCP controls when charging of the Power Pack Unit (PPU) is active. The HCP commands motor function to the MCP. During normal driving the MCP is commanded to charge the PPU as needed. During coast down and regenerative braking the HCP commands the MCP to allow the kinetic energy created in the engine to passively charge the PPU without any drag felt by the driver. The MGU will continue to charge the PPU until the vehicle reaches an auto-stop and the engine is shut down. During an auto-start cranking event, a command is sent to the MCP to crank the engine. Voltage from the 48 volt battery in the PPU is used to drive the three phase motor to crank and start the engine.
The HCP is flash programmable and is sensitive to cold temperature during module flashing. The HCP will need to be flashed when the vehicle is at room temperature. Failure to flash the module at room temperature can cause the flash procedure to not complete which could suggest an unnecessary MGU component replacement.Β
The MGU will build up heat as it operates. The MGU used on the 5.7L engine is air cooled using fan blades behind the pulley to force fresh air through the MGU.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- β’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- β’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- β’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- β’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- β’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
