Engine Timing Verification
Correct timing is critical for the NON free-wheeling designed, 3.6L engine. Engine timing can be verified by using the following procedures:
- Remove the upper intake manifold and both cylinder head covers. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the spark plugs.CAUTION:
When aligning timing marks, always rotate engine by turning the crankshaft. Failure to do so will result in valve or piston damage.
1 - Dial Indicator - Mount Dial Indicator Set (special tool #C-3339A, Set, Dial Indicator) to a stationary point on the engine, such as the left Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor mount. Position the indicator probe into the number four cylinder, rotate the crankshaft clockwise (as viewed from the front) to place the number four cylinder piston at top-dead-center on the compression stroke and set the indicator dial to ZERO .
- While maintaining this alignment, verify that the ARROWS
on the left side cam phasers point toward each other and are parallel to the cylinder head cover mounting surface and that the right side cam phaser ARROWS
point away from each other and the SCRIBE LINES
are parallel to the cylinder head cover mounting surface.NOTE: The phaser markings could align with either an external or internal chain link. Either alignment is acceptable as long as there are twelve chain pins between the markings.
1 - Left Side Cam Phaser Arrows 2 - Left Cylinder Head Cover Mounting Surface 3 - Right Side Cam Phaser Arrows 4 - Right Cylinder Head Cover Mounting Surface 5 - Scribe Lines - There should be twelve chain pins BETWEEN
the exhaust cam phaser triangle marking and the intake cam phaser circle marking as viewed from either the front or rear of the cam phasers.
1 - Exhaust Phaser Triangle Marking 2 - Twelve Chain Link Pins Between Markings 3 - Intake Phaser Circle Marking - If the engine timing is not correct, proceed to Timing Chain and Sprockets for service procedures. Refer to CHAIN AND SPROCKETS, TIMING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
