Test 9A - Short To Ground

1995 Dodge and Ram Pickup R3500, 2D Pickup, 8.0 W, RWD, AutomaticSECTION Test 9A - Short To Ground
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in appropriate TESTS W/CODES article below. For appropriate wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMSΒ  section. Perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.
  • TESTS W/CODES - 3.9L
  • TESTS W/CODES - 5.2L GASOLINE
  • TESTS W/CODES - 5.9L GASOLINE
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
    1. Using scan tool, indicate whether vehicle is equipped with specific module. For module/system options available, refer to MODULE APPLICATIONS table under IDENTIFICATION. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace TCM. Perform TEST VER-1.
    2. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-1.
    3. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect Controller Anti-Lock Brake (CAB) module connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, go to TEST 9B.
    4. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) or Electronic Instrument Cluster (EIC) connector. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace MIC or EIC. Perform TEST VER-1.
    5. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) module connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace VTSS module. Perform TEST VER-1.
    6. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect compass/mini-trip module connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace compass/mini-trip module. Perform TEST VER-1.
    7. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect Infinity premium radio, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace radio/CD player. Perform TEST VER-1.
    8. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Wait 5 minutes before proceeding. Disconnect Air Bag Control Module (ACM) connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace ACM. Perform TEST VER-1.
    9. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) module connector, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace ATC module. Perform TEST VER-1.
    10. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, turn ignition off. Disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) connectors, if equipped. Turn ignition on. If scan tool does not display BUS SHORT TO GROUND, replace BCM. Perform TEST VER-1. If scan tool displays BUS SHORT TO GROUND, disconnect scan tool from Data Link Connector (DLC).
    11. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between DLC, CCD BUS positive circuit (Violet/Brown wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in CCD BUS positive circuit. Perform TEST VER-1.
    12. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, check resistance between DLC, CCD BUS negative circuit (White/Black wire) and ground.
    13. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in CCD BUS negative circuit. Perform TEST VER-1. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace scan tool cable or cartridge as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1.
