Time Delay System Test Timer

1983 Dodge and Ram 400 L4-156 2.6LSECTION Time Delay System Test Timer

1. Check wiring for proper connections and correct as necessary.
2. With ignition switch off, remove wiring connector from solenoid valve.
3. Connect a test light across terminals of connector disconnected in step 2.
4. Start engine. Test light should go on and remain on for 35 seconds for black color coded valves, 60 seconds for orange color coded valves, and 90 seconds for red color coded valves after engine starts.
5. If test light does not go on, remains on indefinitely, or does not remain on the amount of time specified in step 4, replace timer. In order to avoid overloading of timer, current draw of test light should not exceed .5 amps.

Solenoid

1. Make sure that vacuum hose routing is correct and that hoses are not leaking.
2. Disconnect electrical plug from solenoid valve.
3. Connect either solenoid terminal to ground and the other to battery positive terminal to activate the solenoid valve. This will interrupt the vacuum flow to the EGR system. A click should be heard from the solenoid as it is connected to the battery.
4. To check solenoid operation, allow engine to idle, then increase engine speed to 2000 RPM while observing EGR control valve stem. If stem does not move, replace solenoid.
