1999 Chrysler LHSSECTION Removal (Column Shift Models)
NOTE: On column shift models, shift lever assembly may be serviced as a separate component of the steering column. When replacing shift lever assembly, a NEW shift interlock cassette must be installed.
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEMΒ  . Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected from stud on shock tower and isolated from all other components.
  2. Place steering column in full down position. Unsnap upper steering column cover. Place steering column in full up position. Remove tilt lever. Remove screws retaining lower steering column cover. Remove lower cover. Remove center outlet bezel from instrument panel.
  3. Disconnect shift cable from pin on shift lever assembly. See Figure . Unlock shift cable adjuster.
  4. Remove shift lever assembly-to-tilt housing retaining screws. See Figure . Remove shift lever assembly from steering column tilt housing. Disconnect shift interlock cable from latch on shift mechanism. See Figure .
  5. Fully depress release tab on top of shift interlock cassette and slide shift interlock cassette from lock cylinder housing. See Figure . Discard shift interlock cassette.
